name douglas richard tucker but you can call him "tucker", please dob february 13th, 1982 residence born & raised in boston occupation op-ed columnist for the boston globe sexuality straight status facebook official
when ellen gave birth to her fourth child, she'd been told it would be a girl. with a house full of boys and an older husband who was knee-deep in work all the time, she was looking forward to another calming feminine presence in the house. she would be lying if she said she wasn't disappointed when the baby was born and the doctor congratulated her on - surprise - her newborn son. of course she loved her son but it took a few days to warm up to the reality that she would never have a daughter. what she didn't know yet was that the baby, named douglas richard, would be the calm child she had been hoping for. with two middle children who had each at one point been the baby in the family, she lucked out when doug was a smiling, happy baby, content to eat and sleep and eager for his parents' approval.
he showed an interest in writing at a young age, creating fantastic stories and excelling at language arts. doug was outgoing and a pleasure to have in class, and he seemed to really enjoy being at school. naturally, life wasn't all fun and games, because he was often the butt of his brothers' jokes but for the most part, the tucker boys had a reputation for good behavior (well, the third youngest was an exception but not the rule). unlike most of his friends' fathers, gerald tucker was not always up for a game of catch or to shoot some hoops. most of the time, his knees hurt and he just wanted to watch tv and read the paper after work. he wasn't much fun for his sons, but he and doug developed a close bond once gerald discovered doug's interest in writing. the two of them would seek out magazines doug could submit to and gerald was more than happy to hear about the next adventure his son was writing.
by the time doug made it to high school, he was known as "tucker" by nearly everyone. it made his mother upset but he didn't care - it wasn't a name he would've picked for himself! tucker had been performing well, often making honor roll, and he was a member of his school's writing club. when he graduated, he was accepted to northeastern on a scholarship, which was a blessing to his middle class family having already put three other boys through school. he enrolled in the journalism program right off the bat. while his fiction was his pride and joy, he knew he'd need a practical job to keep bread on the table. in any way he could, he tried to write for money, even if it meant sometimes writing someone's papers for them. it wasn't the most honest way to live life but seeing his work get an A was more satisfying than payment. and anyway, it kept him working and practicing and gave him a little extra spending money.
instead of leaving after obtaining his bachelor's degree, tucker stayed on for a few more years to earn his master's, hoping it would be enough to secure him a great job. he didn't know that he'd want to do journalism forever but it was something he enjoyed and was the best alternative if he couldn't make a living from writing fiction. while at university, he was a contributor to the Spectrum, northeastern's literary magazine, and was also an editor for the northeastern news. every step of the way was challenging (because in his opinion, if college isn't challenging, you aren't doing college right) but he came out at the end as one of the top of his class and enjoyed every minute of it.
success in his career didn't happen right away, but his credentials managed to get him into various newspapers and magazines as a contributor. combined, it wasn't quite enough to afford living on his own but he didn't have to worry about that when he met sasha. she was beautiful and fiery and everything he thought he wanted, so much that they moved in together after only a few months. they stayed together for years, eventually getting engaged in 2011. the pair bought a condo together and spent the next few years designing it to their liking, taking their time with the project so as not to bankrupt them. his love for sasha almost overshadowed his achievement of getting a steady job at the boston globe.
in the fall of 2013, tucker's father died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm, days before his 78th birthday. there were times during their long engagement that tucker internally questioned if sasha was still in love with him the way he was in love with her, and they seemed to disagree about many aspects of wedding planning, particularly the cost. they had a fight on the way from the funeral to the cemetery, where sasha began to suggest any inheritance money could be put towards the wedding. in turn, tucker decided if she was so concerned about the money, he would just buy her out of the condo and she could leave. it may have seemed a rash decision but the people they were becoming in their 30s were not the same people who fell in love in their 20s. the termination of their relationship refueled his ambition at work, leading him to a promotion as an op-ed columnist, and getting him closer to becoming an editor. since then, he's dated casually but hasn't jumped into anything serious, and has been enjoying making a name for himself in his career.

⇒ has two roommates, an older hippie couple named jody and trip. they're very friendly and the kitchen always smells strange when they're done cooking.
⇒ was named after his maternal grandfather. he has always hated being called doug and asks literally everyone to just call him tucker, including his own family. it pains him to write articles under the name "doug tucker."
⇒ still lives in the condo that he purchased with his ex. he bought her out and it doesn't phase him that what used to be theirs is now just his. in fact, he's quite happy there.
⇒ in his spare time, he plays dungeons and dragons and has since he was a child. he has characters he has used for literally decades. however, he loves being the dungeon master and is happy to take the role if others don't want it.
⇒ his column for the globe is printed on sundays and wednesdays, and occasionally he will contribute to other sections.
⇒ he has published many short stories, most of which have been under a pen name so as not to create a conflict of interest. he makes a decent amount of money from it.

having been raised in a big family where one voice could get lost among the others, tucker has learned to both be patient and try again if he has something to say, but also to sometimes just go with the flow. he can make himself comfortable in most environments and in the ones where he can't, if it's not polite to remove himself, he will fake it until he makes it. inconveniencing others is something he avoids at all cost, but he feels there's definitely and end-point when it comes to accommodating others. hey, his time on earth is important, too. he's quick with a joke and to light up your smoke, is always down for a billy joel reference, and thinks that life is something to be enjoyed, not endured. after all, we didn't start the fire.
writing has always been his first true love, and he has a genuine fascination with the world. curiosity killed the cat and maybe someday it will kill tucker, too. he loves to know more about people and seeks new adventures and experiences. living in the same city his whole life hasn't hindered him from learning about the world, and he tries to travel whenever he has an opportunity. not that he would consider himself a true thrillseeker but he'll try just about anything once. he tries to be generous with his time and attention, sometimes getting too wrapped up in his work but doesn't everyone? it isn't often that he's flustered and so when he is, it's almost comedic the way he can't figure out how to get a grip. and though he's often responsible and reliable, there are times when he sets out to accomplish something in the morning and ends the evening having done a million things -- none of which are what he set out to do. he follows flights of fancy wherever they lead him, because inspiration is too good to pass up and he believes if he doesn't grab those moments when they present themselves, they will be gone forever.
for lack of a better word, tucker will admit to being a little bit bougie. he'll drink cheap wine if it's what's available, sure, but would he buy it? not if he can afford something better, which he can. and he's absolutely no stranger to wine bars or wine tastings, but that doesn't mean it's all he drinks. he gets a kick out of old-fashioned scotch and cigar rooms, and his beer doesn't have to be craft because he's a hipster, it has to be craft because craft just tastes better. the much bigger side of him that is not bougie though is not going to judge anyone else for their choice in alcohol -- isn't that why the powers that be make such a variety? with the same courtesy, he asks for respect when he complements his rare steak with a fine cabernet.
but all in all, tucker would feel comfortable describing himself as "a laid-back dude who is all about life's eccentricities." he worked hard for what he has and even if it's not someone else's dream come true, it's perfect for him for now
